The program represents not only the virtual semester project of the cooperating universities, but also our reflections, discussions and experiences with experts in the field of events and media architecture. One of the biggest questions to be discussed is how and if virtual live events work and what kind of value they could offer to the event industry in times of the corona crisis. Many seminars of the past semester have developed completely different than originally thought, so that laboratories and also the newly installed LED wall at HAW could not support the teaching. A first draft of a „cookbook“ on challenges and solutions for media architecture on campus was compiled. It asks how they work, how they can be integrated into everyday university life in the long term and how they should be taught. This will be discussed in a second panel with experts from the community of the Media Architecture Biennale (MAB). In addition, students will guide visitors through the individual rooms, explain their work and present their live shows. In the evening we meet in the virtual XRclub with a live DJ set from Fugue State.

Panel Discussion: XR-Events

Artists and cultural actors, organizers and venues, facilitate society’s participation in culture even in these challenging times, while reaching a massive and global online audience. But how long will these formats remain interesting and how do we experience culture “ all alone“, while its intention is to bring people more together. In 2020 we live in a reality in which social events, festivals, concerts and conferences are cancelled and can’t be easily repeated. Clubs and other nightlife venues will most probably remain closed until the end of the year. This poses social and financial challenges for visitors as well as artists, organizers and their teams. So what is going on with the culture, is being asked everywhere at this moment. Many events therefore take place online and in virtual reality. Thus, the question arises as to whether Virtual Reality can support an industry that involves social contact and immediate experience? Would VR, MR or XR be suitable to gather again in these times and experience live concerts, club events or conferences together? How could the social or the live component in VR be solved? Would it be a format that could complement events even after the crisis and if so, how?

MAB Meetup: Media Architecture in the University Context

Media architecture has made its way into teaching and research at universities. This includes the design of media content at art academies, the architectural integration into urban space, technical implementation and software development in the disciplines of event technology or computer science. In addition, some universities have been able to install media facades, often as part of a research project. During the integration phase as well on the long term, they all face completely different challenges, such as maintenance, curating of content or changing responsibilities after the completion of a project. So how do you meet such challenges in a university context and what solutions have been already found? And ultimately how to teach and research this transdisciplinary field?
